Zakat vs Sadaqah: what's the difference?

Both are giving, but only one is a calculated obligation — and confusing them can leave your Zakat unpaid.

TL;DR · 30-SECOND ANSWER

Zakat is the obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on qualifying wealth above Nisab, given to specific categories of recipients. Sadaqah is voluntary charity of any amount, any time, to anyone. Generous Sadaqah is rewarded but does not fulfil your Zakat, and Zakat must reach eligible recipients while Sadaqah can go to any good cause.

01 · OBLIGATORY VS VOLUNTARY

The core distinction.

Zakat is a defined obligation: a set percentage of qualifying wealth, due once a lunar year has passed above Nisab, given to specific recipients. Sadaqah is voluntary charity — any amount, at any time, to anyone in need. One is a duty with fixed terms; the other is an open, meritorious act.

02 · THEY DON'T SUBSTITUTE

One does not cover the other.

This is the practical point that matters most: giving generous Sadaqah through the year does not discharge your Zakat. Unless a payment was intended and directed as Zakat to an eligible recipient, it counts as voluntary charity, and your calculated Zakat remains due separately.

INTENTION SEPARATES THEM

The same donation can be Zakat or Sadaqah depending on your intention and whether the recipient is eligible for Zakat.

03 · WHERE EACH CAN GO

Recipients differ.

Zakat must reach one of the eight eligible categories, so it cannot fund just any project. Sadaqah is far broader — it can support a mosque, a well, education or any good cause. Knowing this helps you direct each correctly.
