How to give your Zakat once you've calculated it
Calculating the figure is only half the duty — giving it to the right people, with the right intention, completes it.
To give Zakat, direct it to one or more of the eight eligible categories, with the intention that it is Zakat. You can give directly to an eligible person or through a trustworthy Zakat charity that verifies recipients. You need not cover all categories, and giving promptly once due is best. Close dependants you must support cannot receive it.
Eligible recipients only.
Zakat must reach one or more of the eight categories the Qur'an specifies — the poor, the needy and others. Giving to a good cause outside these categories does not fulfil the obligation. You do not have to cover all eight; a single eligible recipient is enough.
Zakat generally cannot go to those you are already obliged to maintain, such as a spouse, children or parents.
Choose a trustworthy route.
You can give Zakat directly to an eligible person you know to be in need, or through a reputable Zakat charity that verifies recipients and distributes on your behalf — locally or internationally. Both are valid; a trustworthy charity simply takes on the verification and delivery.
What makes it count.
The intention that the payment is Zakat is what turns it from general charity into a discharged obligation. Give promptly once your Zakat is due rather than delaying without cause, and keep a record of what you gave, to whom or which body, and when.
