Who can receive your Zakat? The eight categories
Zakat is not only calculated in a defined way — it is also directed to defined people. The Qur'an sets out eight categories of eligible recipients, and giving outside them does not discharge the obligation.
The Qur'an (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60) names eight categories who may receive Zakat: the poor, the needy, those employed to administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing those in bondage, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller. Close family you are already obliged to support generally cannot be given your Zakat.
A defined list, not an open choice.
Where the poor and needy are due Zakat, the entitlement is scriptural. Because the recipients are specified, Zakat cannot be redirected to any good cause of the giver's choosing — it must reach one or more of the eight categories to count.

Who each category covers.
- The poor (al-fuqara): those with little or no means.
- The needy (al-masakin): those whose income does not meet their basic needs.
- Administrators (al-amilin): those appointed to collect and distribute Zakat.
- Reconciliation of hearts (al-mu'allafat qulubuhum): those drawn toward or strengthened in faith.
- Freeing those in bondage (ar-riqab): historically freeing slaves; understood today as freeing people from unjust captivity or bondage.
- Those in debt (al-gharimin): people burdened by debt they cannot repay from their own means.
- In the cause of Allah (fi sabilillah): efforts serving the community and the faith, as qualified scholars define the scope.
- The wayfarer (ibn as-sabil): a traveller stranded and cut off from their wealth, even if wealthy at home.
Where Zakat may not go.
Zakat generally cannot be given to the immediate dependants you are already obliged to maintain — such as your spouse, your children, or your parents — because supporting them is a separate duty. It is also not paid to the wealthy, nor, in the common view, used for expenses like funeral costs or building projects that do not transfer ownership to an eligible recipient.
The precise boundaries of some categories — especially 'in the cause of Allah' and payments to extended family — are debated among scholars. For a specific case, confirm eligibility with qualified guidance rather than assuming.
Turning the figure into help.
You may give your Zakat to a single eligible person or split it across several categories; you do not have to cover all eight. Many give through a trustworthy Zakat-administering charity that verifies eligibility and distributes on the giver's behalf, which can also satisfy the intention to reach the right recipients.
Whatever route you choose, the intention that the payment is Zakat — and that it reaches an eligible recipient — is what makes it count toward the obligation.

Can I give Zakat to my own family?+
Not to dependants you are already required to maintain, such as a spouse, children or parents. More distant relatives who are genuinely eligible — and whom you are not obliged to support — can generally receive it; confirm the specific case with qualified guidance.
Do I have to cover all eight categories?+
No. Zakat may be given to a single eligible recipient or divided among several categories. Covering all eight is not required.
Can I give Zakat to a mosque or general good cause?+
Only where it falls within an eligible category as qualified scholars define it. Zakat must reach one of the eight groups, so general projects that do not transfer ownership to an eligible recipient are commonly excluded.
