What Nisab means
Nisab is the threshold that decides whether Zakat is owed at all. If your net Zakatable wealth is below it, no Zakat is due; if you are at or above it for a full lunar year, the standard 2.5% applies. It is defined in weights of precious metal rather than a fixed cash figure, so its value in any currency rises and falls with the market.
How to work it out
The arithmetic is simple: multiply the Nisab weight by the current price per gram of that metal in your currency. Gold Nisab = price per gram × 87.48. Silver Nisab = price per gram × 612.36. Compare your net wealth — assets minus eligible near-term liabilities — with the figure for the standard you follow.
Gold or silver?
The two standards give different thresholds, and the silver Nisab is usually the lower one. Because it makes Zakat due at a lower level of wealth, more people qualify and more reaches those in need, which is why many scholars and charities encourage the silver standard. Both are valid; follow a qualified view and keep it consistent.
