Zakat in the UK: charities, Gift Aid, and giving locally

In the UK there is no government Zakat collection. You work out your own Zakat and give it through trusted channels — which makes choosing where it goes, and understanding Gift Aid, part of the process.

TL;DR · 30-SECOND ANSWER

In the UK you calculate Zakat yourself and give it through registered charities such as the National Zakat Foundation or established relief organisations. Calculate in pounds using the gold or silver price in GBP. Gift Aid can often be applied to Zakat, letting the charity reclaim extra from HMRC while you still give the full Zakat amount.

01 · NO STATE SYSTEM

The obligation is yours to organise.

Unlike some Muslim-majority countries, the UK government does not collect or distribute Zakat. That means the full responsibility — calculating the amount, choosing eligible recipients, and giving on time — rests with you. The upside is control: you decide exactly where your Zakat goes.

CALCULATE IN POUNDS

Total your qualifying wealth in GBP and use the gold or silver price in pounds on your Zakat date to set your Nisab.

02 · GIVING THROUGH CHARITIES

Local distribution and relief organisations.

Most people in the UK give Zakat through registered charities that verify recipients on their behalf. Some, such as the National Zakat Foundation, focus on distributing Zakat to eligible people within the UK; large relief charities direct it to those in need internationally. Both can satisfy the intention to reach the right categories, provided the charity distributes Zakat to eligible recipients.

Giving locally and giving abroad are both valid. Many choose to split their Zakat, keeping a portion for those in hardship in their own community.

03 · GIFT AID

How the tax reclaim interacts with Zakat.

Gift Aid lets a UK charity reclaim 25p from HMRC for every £1 donated by an eligible taxpayer, at no extra cost to the giver. Many scholars and Zakat charities accept Gift Aid on Zakat: you still give the full Zakat amount from your own wealth, and the reclaimed tax is additional money the charity receives — it does not reduce what you have given as Zakat.

You still give the full amount. Gift Aid adds to what the charity gets from HMRC; it does not come out of your Zakat, so your obligation is met in full.
04 · GIVE ON TIME

Match your date and your giving.

Because no one prompts you, it helps to fix a Zakat date and calculate on it each year, then give promptly through your chosen charity. If you use Gift Aid, make sure you have paid enough UK Income or Capital Gains Tax in the year to cover the amount reclaimed, as the rules require.

VERIFY CURRENT RULES

Gift Aid conditions and charity registration can change. Confirm eligibility with the charity and check current HMRC guidance.

FAQ · QUESTIONS

Questions people ask.

Does the UK government collect Zakat?+

No. There is no state Zakat system in the UK. You calculate your own Zakat and give it through registered charities of your choice.

Can I claim Gift Aid on Zakat?+

Often yes. Many Zakat charities accept Gift Aid: you give the full Zakat amount and the charity reclaims extra tax from HMRC, which does not reduce your Zakat. You must have paid enough UK tax to cover the reclaim.

Can I give my UK Zakat abroad?+

Yes. Both local distribution (for example through the National Zakat Foundation) and international relief are valid, as long as the charity delivers Zakat to eligible recipients. Many split their giving between the two.
