Zakat on an ISA: cash and stocks & shares
An ISA is a tax wrapper, not a special asset class. What matters for Zakat is what is inside it — cash or investments — not the ISA label.
An ISA does not change your Zakat; look through to what it holds. A Cash ISA is treated like ordinary savings and is Zakatable in full. A Stocks & Shares ISA is treated like the investments it contains. Both are generally accessible, so include their value on your Zakat date.
Look through to the contents.
An ISA is simply a UK tax-free wrapper. For Zakat it changes nothing: you treat whatever is inside it exactly as you would outside a wrapper. The tax advantage is real for your finances, but it does not exempt the wealth from Zakat.
Unlike a pension, most ISAs can be accessed, so their value normally sits in your ordinary calculation on your Zakat date.
Two ISAs, two treatments.
A Cash ISA is money, so it is Zakatable in full like any savings balance. A Stocks & Shares ISA holds investments, so it follows the treatment of shares and funds: a cautious approach includes the market value on your date, while a look-through approach counts the Zakatable proportion of the underlying holdings.
A Lifetime ISA adds an access penalty for non-qualifying withdrawals, which some treat like a mild pension-style restriction — consider access when deciding.
Value on your Zakat date.
Take the balance or investment value as it stands on your single Zakat date, in pounds, and fold it into the rest of your wealth before comparing with Nisab.
Whether the funds inside a Stocks & Shares ISA are compliant is a separate question from Zakat. Screen and purify as advised.
Questions people ask.
Do I pay Zakat on a Cash ISA?+
Yes. A Cash ISA is treated like ordinary savings and is Zakatable in full at its balance on your Zakat date. The tax-free wrapper does not exempt it.
How is a Stocks & Shares ISA treated?+
Like the investments it holds: a cautious approach uses market value on your date; a look-through approach counts the Zakatable proportion of the underlying holdings. Choose a qualified view and keep it consistent.
Does the ISA tax benefit reduce my Zakat?+
No. An ISA is only a tax wrapper. It changes your tax position, not your Zakat obligation on the wealth inside.
