Zakat for homemakers: your own wealth counts
Even without an income of your own, the gold, mahr and savings that belong to you are your wealth — and your Zakat, separate from your spouse's.
Zakat is an individual obligation, so a homemaker calculates on her own wealth: her gold and jewellery (per the view she follows), her mahr if received and held, and her personal savings. If her own net wealth meets Nisab for a lunar year, she owes 2.5% — separately from her spouse, not merged into his.
Your wealth is yours.
Zakat is owed by the individual who owns the wealth, not by the household as a unit. So a homemaker without her own income can still owe Zakat on what belongs to her — and her calculation is separate from her husband's, not folded into it.
Gold, mahr and savings.
- Gold and jewellery you own — Zakatable according to the view you follow on personal jewellery.
- Your mahr, once you have received it and still hold it as wealth.
- Personal savings, gifts and any money that is genuinely yours.
For many homemakers, gold jewellery is the largest holding. Whether it is Zakatable depends on the school you follow — a point worth settling clearly.
A separate, simple sum.
Total your own Zakatable wealth on your Zakat date, subtract any eligible near-term liabilities of your own, and compare with Nisab. If you are above it, 2.5% is due; if below, no Zakat is owed this year. Your husband may offer to pay it on your behalf, but the obligation and the wealth are yours.
Questions people ask.
Do homemakers pay Zakat without their own income?+
Yes, if their own wealth meets Nisab for a lunar year. Zakat is owed on wealth you own — gold, mahr and savings — not on income, so a lack of salary does not remove the obligation.
Is my gold jewellery Zakatable?+
It depends on the view you follow. The Hanafi school charges Zakat on all gold jewellery; the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools generally exempt jewellery in genuine personal use. Choose a qualified view and keep it consistent.
Is my Zakat separate from my husband's?+
Yes. Zakat is individual, so your wealth is calculated separately from his and not merged. He may pay it on your behalf, but the obligation attaches to your wealth.
