Zakat for families: calculating as a household
A family can sit down and calculate together, but Zakat stays individual — each person's wealth is their own, and merging it distorts the result.
Zakat is an individual obligation, so within a family each person calculates on their own wealth. You can work through it together for convenience, but keep a separate column per owner: do not merge a spouse's or child's assets just because you share a home, and combine totals only as a planning view after each individual calculation is clear.
Whose wealth is whose.
It is natural for a household to think of 'our' money, but Zakat attaches to the individual owner. A husband, a wife and an adult child each owe Zakat on their own wealth, based on their own ownership — sharing a home or a bank login does not merge them for Zakat.
Keep it separate, then total.
The clean way to calculate as a family is one column per beneficial owner. Assign each asset to whoever genuinely owns it, document anything jointly owned by its real shares, and only combine the totals afterwards as a household planning view — not as the basis of the calculation.
A jointly held account should be split by ownership, not counted in full by both spouses.
A special case.
A child's own wealth is theirs, not the parents'. Whether a minor owes Zakat is itself a point on which the schools differ, so treat a child's savings separately and follow a qualified view rather than folding it into a parent's figure.
Questions people ask.
Can a family calculate Zakat together?+
Yes, for convenience — but keep a separate column per owner. Zakat is individual, so each person's wealth is calculated on its own and only combined afterwards as a planning view.
Do I include my spouse's gold in my Zakat?+
No. Your spouse's gold is their wealth, calculated in their own Zakat. Merging it into yours distorts both calculations.
How do we handle a joint account?+
Split it by genuine ownership rather than counting it in full for each spouse, so the same money is not double-counted.
