Is Zakat due on money in the bank?

Money in the bank is the clearest case of Zakatable wealth — but people still trip over fluctuating balances and interest.

TL;DR · 30-SECOND ANSWER

Money in the bank is Zakatable wealth. Include current, savings and foreign-currency balances at their value on your Zakat date. You do not track each deposit's own anniversary — you value the whole balance on one date, provided your total wealth stayed above Nisab for the year. Interest (riba) is given away separately, not counted as your own.

01 · YES, IT COUNTS

The clearest Zakatable asset.

Cash held in the bank is the most straightforward form of Zakatable wealth. Current accounts, savings accounts, foreign-currency accounts and balances in payment apps all count at their value on your Zakat date, converted into one reporting currency.

02 · A FLUCTUATING BALANCE

One date, not many.

Your balance rises and falls all year, but you do not need to track each deposit's own anniversary. As long as your total wealth stayed above Nisab across the lunar year, you value the whole balance on your single Zakat date. Money that arrived during the year is simply included then.

ABOVE NISAB FOR THE YEAR

If your balance briefly dipped below Nisab but recovered, the common view does not necessarily reset your year, provided you were above it at the start and end.

03 · INTEREST IS SEPARATE

Don't count riba as yours.

Interest (riba) credited to an account is not lawful to keep. Pay Zakat on your principal, but give away any interest received separately — it is not part of your wealth or your Zakat.

FAQ · QUESTIONS

Questions people ask.

Do I pay Zakat on money in my current account?+

Yes. Current, savings and foreign-currency balances are all Zakatable at their value on your Zakat date, provided your total wealth met Nisab for the lunar year.

My balance changes constantly — which figure do I use?+

The balance on your single Zakat date. You do not track each deposit separately; the whole balance is valued on that one day, as long as your total stayed above Nisab for the year.

Is interest included in my Zakat?+

No. Interest (riba) is not lawful to keep — give it away separately. Zakat is calculated on your principal, not on interest received.
