How much is Nisab today? Working out the threshold
There is no single 'Nisab in dollars' — it changes every day with the gold and silver price. Here is how to work out today's threshold in your own currency.
Nisab is the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver, so its cash figure changes daily with metal prices. To find today's Nisab, multiply the weight by the current price per gram in your currency: gold price × 87.48, or silver price × 612.36. The silver standard is usually the lower threshold.
Why 'Nisab today' keeps changing.
People often search for the Nisab as if it were a set amount of money, but it is not. Nisab is defined as a weight of precious metal — 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver — so its value in dollars, pounds or rupees rises and falls with the metal price. That is why the figure is different from month to month, and why last year's number can mislead.
There is a gold Nisab and a silver Nisab. They are not equal — silver usually gives the lower cash threshold, so more people reach it.
Weight times today's price.
- Get today's price per gram.
Find the current gold or silver price per gram in your currency.
- Multiply by the Nisab weight.
Gold Nisab = price per gram × 87.48. Silver Nisab = price per gram × 612.36.
- Compare with your net wealth.
If your assets minus eligible liabilities meet or exceed that figure — and have for a lunar year — Zakat is due at 2.5%.
Our calculator does this for you and lets you edit the price, so you can match it to a source you trust on your Zakat date.
Use a price from the day.
Because the threshold moves, always work out Nisab with a current price on your actual Zakat date, in the currency you are calculating in. A balance that sits just above or below the line can fall either side as prices shift, so a stale figure can flip whether Zakat is due.
Set your Nisab and value all your wealth in the same reporting currency to keep the comparison clean.
Questions people ask.
How much is Nisab today in my currency?+
It depends on the current metal price. Multiply the gold price per gram by 87.48, or the silver price per gram by 612.36, in your currency on your Zakat date. The silver figure is usually lower.
Why does the Nisab keep changing?+
Because it is a fixed weight of gold or silver, not a fixed amount of money. As metal prices move, the cash value of the threshold moves with them.
Which is lower, gold or silver Nisab?+
At modern prices the silver Nisab is usually the lower threshold, so more people reach it. Both standards are valid; choose a qualified view and apply it consistently.
