How to calculate Zakat on gold
Zakat on gold comes down to two numbers: how many grams of pure gold you own, and today's price per gram.
To calculate Zakat on gold: find the net fine-gold weight of your items (adjusting for purity and excluding stones), multiply by today's gold price per gram in your currency, and apply 2.5% if your overall net wealth meets Nisab. Whether worn jewellery is included depends on the school you follow.
Find your fine-gold grams.
Gold is valued by its pure gold content, not its gross weight or retail price. So the first step is to work out the net fine-gold weight of what you own: adjust for purity (for example, 22-carat is about 91.6% gold, 18-carat about 75%) and exclude the weight of stones and non-gold fittings.
If you are unsure, a jeweller can tell you the purity and net gold weight of each item.
Grams times today's rate.
Multiply your total fine-gold grams by the current gold price per gram in your reporting currency on your Zakat date. That gives the market value of your gold, which joins the rest of your Zakatable wealth.
Investment gold — coins, bars, bullion — is included on every view. Whether worn personal jewellery is included depends on the school you follow.
2.5% on the total.
Add your gold's value to your other assets, subtract eligible liabilities, and compare the net with your Nisab. If you meet the threshold, 2.5% applies. You do not pay 2.5% on the gold in isolation unless it is your only wealth — it is your total net Zakatable wealth that is assessed.

How do I calculate Zakat on gold?+
Find the net fine-gold weight of your items, adjust for purity and exclude stones, multiply by today's gold price per gram, add it to your other wealth, and apply 2.5% if your net total meets Nisab.
Do I use the price I paid or today's price?+
Today's gold price on your Zakat date. Gold is always valued by its current market value, never the amount you originally paid.
Is my gold jewellery included?+
Investment gold always is. Whether worn personal jewellery is included depends on the school you follow — the Hanafi view includes it; the majority generally exempt jewellery in genuine personal use.
