Zakat on RSUs and stock options

Equity compensation splits neatly for Zakat: what has vested and is yours counts, what is still a future promise generally does not.

TL;DR · 30-SECOND ANSWER

Vested RSUs are shares you own, so they are Zakatable at their market value on your Zakat date. Unvested RSUs are not yet yours and are excluded until they vest. Unexercised stock options are generally not Zakatable until exercised, since you do not yet own the shares. Once you own shares, treat them like any equity holding.

01 · VESTING IS THE LINE

Owned versus promised.

Equity compensation is Zakatable only once it is genuinely yours. Vesting is the dividing line: vested restricted stock units (RSUs) are shares you own, while unvested grants are a future promise that may never fully materialise. Zakat follows ownership, so unvested equity is excluded until it vests.

02 · RSUS AND OPTIONS

How each is treated.

  1. Vested RSUs.

Shares you own — include their market value on your Zakat date, like any equity holding.

  2. Unvested RSUs.

Not yet yours — excluded until they vest.

  3. Stock options.

Generally not Zakatable until exercised, because until then you own a right to buy shares, not the shares themselves.

After exercising options or receiving vested shares, treat the resulting stock like any other shareholding under the method you follow.

03 · VALUE AND WITHHOLDING

Practical points.

Use the market value of vested shares on your Zakat date. Where shares were sold to cover tax at vesting, only the net shares you actually hold are counted. Keep your vesting and brokerage statements with your worksheet.

PERMISSIBILITY IS SEPARATE

Whether your employer's shares are compliant to hold is a separate screening question from Zakat.

FAQ · QUESTIONS

Questions people ask.

Are unvested RSUs Zakatable?+

No. Unvested RSUs are not yet beneficially yours, so they are excluded until they vest. Only vested RSUs — shares you actually own — are included.

Do I pay Zakat on stock options?+

Generally not until you exercise them, because an unexercised option is a right to buy shares, not ownership of the shares. Once exercised, treat the shares like any equity holding.

How do I value vested RSUs?+

At their market price on your Zakat date, counting only the net shares you actually hold after any sell-to-cover for tax.
