Zakat on Ethereum and altcoins

Ethereum and most tradable altcoins follow the same rule as Bitcoin — but novel tokens, stablecoins and illiquid coins each carry their own wrinkle.

TL;DR · 30-SECOND ANSWER

Tradable altcoins such as Ethereum are commonly treated as Zakatable wealth at their market value on your Zakat date, at 2.5%. Stablecoins are treated like the cash they track. Illiquid, locked or novel tokens may need specialist review. Include exchange and wallet balances, and price everything on a single date.

01 · SAME RULE AS BITCOIN

Tradable tokens are wealth.

Ethereum and other liquid, tradable altcoins you beneficially own are treated by most contemporary scholars as Zakatable wealth, exactly like Bitcoin. Their market value on your Zakat date joins your other assets, and 2.5% applies where your net wealth meets Nisab.

STABLECOINS

A stablecoin that tracks a currency is treated like that cash. A dollar-pegged stablecoin is effectively dollars for Zakat.

02 · LIQUIDITY MATTERS

Illiquid and locked tokens.

Where a token is thinly traded, locked in vesting, or hard to value, be careful. You still generally owe Zakat on what you own, but the valuation needs a fair, dated estimate rather than a headline figure — and genuinely inaccessible positions may be treated differently. Seek guidance for unusual tokens.

03 · ONE DATE, ONE SOURCE

Value cleanly.

Price every holding at your Zakat date using one consistent source, across exchanges and self-custody wallets alike. Keep a screenshot or export for your records.

PERMISSIBILITY IS SEPARATE

Whether a particular token is permissible to own is debated and depends on what it is. Calculating Zakat is not a ruling on that.
