Zakat in Saudi Arabia: business collection and personal giving

Saudi Arabia collects business Zakat through an official authority, but your personal Zakat on savings and gold is still yours to calculate and give.

TL;DR · 30-SECOND ANSWER

In Saudi Arabia, Zakat on Saudi and GCC-owned businesses is assessed and collected officially by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA). Personal Zakat on your own savings, gold and investments is not part of that and remains your responsibility — calculate it in riyals on your Zakat date and give it to eligible recipients.

01 · BUSINESS ZAKAT

Collected by ZATCA.

Saudi Arabia is one of the countries with an official Zakat system for businesses. The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) assesses and collects Zakat from Saudi and GCC-owned companies on their Zakat base. If you own a business subject to this, its Zakat is handled through the official filing rather than by you personally.

02 · PERSONAL ZAKAT

Still your responsibility.

The official business system does not cover your personal wealth. Zakat on your own savings, gold, and personal investments remains yours to calculate and give. Total that wealth in riyals on your Zakat date, subtract eligible near-term liabilities, compare with the gold or silver Nisab, and give 2.5% where due.

DON'T DOUBLE UP

Do not count business assets already assessed through official channels a second time in your personal calculation.

03 · GIVING IT

To eligible recipients.

Personal Zakat can be given directly to eligible people or through trusted charitable channels. Confirm that recipients meet the requirements of the view you follow.

VERIFY LOCALLY

Business Zakat rules and filing requirements are set by ZATCA and can change. Confirm current obligations through official channels or a qualified adviser.
