Zakat in Canada: calculating and giving in dollars
Canada leaves Zakat entirely to you — calculated in Canadian dollars and given through registered charities that can issue tax receipts.
In Canada you calculate Zakat yourself in Canadian dollars, using the gold or silver price on your Zakat date, and give through a CRA-registered charity. Registered charities issue official receipts that earn a donation tax credit — a bonus that does not change your Zakat obligation.
No government collection.
Like most Western countries, Canada does not collect Zakat. You total your qualifying wealth in Canadian dollars, subtract eligible near-term liabilities, compare with the gold or silver Nisab in dollars, and give 2.5% where the threshold is met.
Choose a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency so that recipients are verified and, if you wish, an official donation receipt can be issued.
How receipts help.
Donations to CRA-registered charities earn a non-refundable donation tax credit, combining federal and provincial portions, with a higher rate applying above a modest annual threshold. Because Zakat given to such a charity is a donation, it can qualify — but as with everywhere, the tax credit is a benefit, not the point, and it does not reduce the Zakat you owe.
Keep the official receipt with your worksheet if you plan to claim the credit.
RRSPs, TFSAs and access.
Canadian registered accounts such as RRSPs and TFSAs vary in access and structure, so treat them like any pension or investment: identify what is beneficially yours and accessible before deciding how to include it. A locked-in or heavily penalised balance is not the same as free cash.
Charity status and credit rates change. Confirm CRA registration and current rules before claiming a credit.
Questions people ask.
Does Canada have a state Zakat system?+
No. You calculate your own Zakat in Canadian dollars and give it through CRA-registered charities of your choice.
Can I get a tax receipt for Zakat in Canada?+
Yes, if you give to a CRA-registered charity. It issues an official receipt that earns a donation tax credit. The credit is a bonus and does not change your Zakat obligation.
How do I handle my RRSP or TFSA?+
Treat them like any pension or investment: work out what is beneficially yours and accessible, and value that on your Zakat date. A locked-in balance is not the same as available cash.
