Zakat for freelancers and the self-employed

Freelance income arrives unevenly, but Zakat does not track every payment — it looks at what you still hold on one date each year.

TL;DR · 30-SECOND ANSWER

Freelancers calculate Zakat like anyone else: on your Zakat date, total your cash, business balances and strong unpaid invoices you expect to collect, subtract eligible near-term liabilities and tax due, and pay 2.5% if the net meets Nisab. Irregular income does not each start its own clock — you value everything on one date.

01 · INCOME VS WHAT YOU HOLD

Zakat looks at the snapshot.

Freelance earnings come in bursts, which makes Zakat feel unpredictable — but it is not based on how much you earned during the year. It is based on what you still hold on your Zakat date. Money that came in and was spent on living costs is gone; money that remains as savings or business cash is counted.

02 · DON'T FORGET INVOICES

Money owed to you counts.

The asset freelancers most often overlook is unpaid invoices. A strong receivable — work you have done and reasonably expect to be paid for — is generally part of your Zakatable wealth. Include confirmed invoices you expect to collect; set aside genuinely doubtful ones.

TAX DUE IS A LIABILITY

Income tax you genuinely owe in the near term can be deducted like other near-term debts — but not a full estimate of future tax.

03 · ONE DATE, ONE TOTAL

Bring it together.

Pick a single Zakat date, then total your personal cash, business bank balances, and strong receivables, and subtract eligible near-term liabilities. Compare the net with your Nisab and pay 2.5% where due — no need to track each project's own timeline.

FAQ · QUESTIONS

Questions people ask.

How do freelancers calculate Zakat with irregular income?+

On your Zakat date, total what you still hold — cash, business balances and strong unpaid invoices — subtract eligible near-term liabilities and tax due, and pay 2.5% if the net meets Nisab. Income already spent is not counted.

Do I pay Zakat on unpaid invoices?+

Strong receivables — work you expect to be paid for — are generally included in your Zakatable wealth. Genuinely doubtful invoices can be set aside until collected.

Can I deduct my tax bill?+

Tax genuinely due in the near term can be treated as an eligible liability, like other current debts — but not a full estimate of future taxes.
