When should I pay Zakat?
Zakat has a due time as well as an amount — one lunar year from the date your wealth first crossed Nisab.
Pay Zakat when a full lunar year has passed on wealth that stayed above Nisab. Set your Zakat date as the anniversary of when your wealth first met Nisab, and calculate on it each Hijri year. Because the lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar year, that date drifts earlier on the Gregorian calendar. Ramadan is a popular but optional choice.
The timing rule.
Zakat on wealth becomes due once a full lunar year — the hawl, about 354 days — has passed on wealth that stayed at or above Nisab throughout. So the answer to 'when' is: on the anniversary, in the lunar calendar, of the day your wealth first reached the threshold.
Because the lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the solar year, a Hijri-based Zakat date moves earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year.
One anchor, every year.
Fix your Zakat date once, record it, and calculate on it every Hijri year using the balances and values as they stand that day. This avoids paying whenever you happen to remember, which risks paying early, late or twice.
Popular, not required.
Many choose to give in Ramadan for the greater reward, and you can set your Zakat date within the month so your lunar year and your giving align. But Zakat is due when your own year completes, whenever that falls — Ramadan is a preference, not an obligation.
Questions people ask.
When is Zakat due?+
Once a full lunar year has passed on wealth held above Nisab — on the lunar anniversary of the date your wealth first reached the threshold. You calculate on that date each Hijri year.
Why does my Zakat date change each year?+
Because it follows the lunar calendar, which is about eleven days shorter than the solar year, so a Hijri-based date drifts earlier on the Gregorian calendar annually.
Do I have to pay in Ramadan?+
No. Ramadan is a popular choice for the extra reward, and you can align your date with it, but Zakat is due when your own lunar year completes, whenever that is.
