How to calculate Zakat on your salary
There is no 'Zakat on salary' as income arrives — Zakat looks at what remains as wealth on your date, not what passed through your account.
Zakat is not charged on salary as it is earned. It is charged on the wealth you still hold on your Zakat date. Salary spent during the year is not counted; salary that accumulated as savings is. So you do not track each paycheque — you value your total savings on one date and apply 2.5% if it meets Nisab.
Income is not the base.
A common misunderstanding is that Zakat takes 2.5% of every pay cheque, like a payroll tax. It does not. Zakat is a charge on accumulated wealth held for a lunar year, not on income as it arrives. What matters is what remains as savings on your Zakat date, not what your salary was during the year.
Only what remains counts.
Salary you received and spent on living costs during the year is gone and is not counted. Salary that built up into savings is part of your Zakatable wealth. So a high earner who spends everything may owe less than a modest earner who saves — because Zakat follows retained wealth, not income.
You do not calculate each pay cheque's own year. Value your total savings on your single Zakat date.
Paying as you earn.
Some people like to give a portion of each salary as Zakat for convenience. That is permitted as advance payment by many scholars, provided you reconcile against your actual Zakat due on your annual date — topping up or carrying over any difference.
Questions people ask.
Do I pay Zakat on my salary each month?+
Not as income arrives. Zakat is due on the savings you still hold on your Zakat date, not on your salary. Money you earned and spent during the year is not counted.
How is Zakat on income calculated?+
Value your total accumulated savings on your Zakat date, subtract eligible near-term liabilities, compare with Nisab, and apply 2.5%. You do not track each pay cheque separately.
Can I give Zakat from each pay cheque?+
Yes, many scholars allow it as advance payment, provided you reconcile against the actual amount due on your annual Zakat date, topping up or carrying over any difference.
